According to Steve Sullivan’s US Error Note Encyclopedia (page 210), this awesome note is the result of a Overprinting Machine Bounce. He explains that the bounce occurs when the Overprint machine is stopped due to an error being detected. As the machine is switched off the print heads, which are pneumatic, can “bounce” as the air is slowly released from them.
He goes on to say that such errors will always display the same Serial Number.
Now that we know the why, we can move onto the wow! Impressive as all get out, errors such as this are extremely rare. Rated by Sullivan an R9 on the rarity scale (with “R1 being the most common and R10 being the rarest”), this note combines rarity with that special visual impact that is not a function of damage or cruel circumstances (as many errors are), but more a result of whimsy and good fortune.
A note that you will find yourself coming back to many times, it will fit readily into the finest of error collections.
Please note that there is a slight margin tear on the left-upper border. It does not impact the design or the wonderful eye-appeal.
